As I Pass the Dreadlocks' Camp I Heard Them Say
On the way to work this morning while listening to Sirius Jam_ON, I was caught off guard when they played Musical Youth's Pass the Dutchie. At first I thought I must have accidentally hit one of the buttons causing the station to change but that was not the case as the display clearly showed "17 Jam_ON".
Puzzled at first by this odd selection it soon dawned on me that it might have something to do with the date of April 20th or four-twenty using the cannabis culture's lexicon. But what I eventually found even more surprising was that this song, which was extremely popular in the early eighties and played on mainstream terrestrial radio, could be about marijuana usage.
No way!, I thought to myself. Did they sneak one past the nose of the FCC?
Thanks to the never ending rabbit hole commonly referred to as the internets by Gaiman and Wheaton, I was able to find my answer.
Its good to know that the naivety of my youth is still shining brightly.
